What Are the Inexhaustible Energy Sources?

With the increase in industrial activities, the need for energy has also increased. Due to the energy obtained from the use of fossil fuels, an average of 20 billion tons of carbon dioxide, 100 million tons of sulfur compounds, 2 million tons of lead, and many more toxic chemicals are released into the earth's atmosphere every year. Of course, over time, it was realized that the energy obtained from fossil fuels left negative effects on the environment, climate, nature, and human beings. Thus, sustainable and environmentally friendly energy sources have started to gain great importance.

Let us briefly touch upon the energy sources that can be continuously obtained from nature and are inexhaustible:

1. Solar Energy

The sun, which is the primary source of energy on Earth, is also one of the fundamental sources of life on our planet. Since it possesses a very powerful energy, it affects all other natural energy sources either directly or indirectly.

Various technologies have been developed to harness the energy that solar rays bring to our world. Some of these are solar collectors, solar power plants, and photovoltaic cells, meaning solar cells. 2. Wind Energy

The increased use of wind energy is of great importance in terms of adopting environmentally friendly and sustainable energy production methods. Wind, which is formed by the displacement of hot and cold air in the atmosphere, releases kinetic energy. This energy is first converted into mechanical energy, and then into electrical energy. Wind power plants (WPP) are needed for the production of electrical energy. These plants must be installed in locations with a height of 50 m and an average wind speed of at least 7 m/s. Some of the areas where wind energy is used are park, street, and avenue lighting, irrigation, and various institutions and organizations.

Our country also aims to utilize wind energy efficiently. According to the January 2022 data of the Turkish Wind Energy Statistics Association, the share of electricity generated by wind energy in Turkey’s total electricity production reached 9.84% in 2021.

3. Hydroelectric Energy

Hydroelectric energy is electrical energy generated by harnessing the power of flowing water. It is one of the energy types with the most deeply rooted technology. People have been utilizing the power of water since the earliest periods of history. Water mills in particular were used in many production activities until the industrial revolution. However, because the generated energy could not be stored due to technological inadequacies and industrial needs could not be met, people turned to fossil fuels that harm the environment.

Today, however, electrical energy can be obtained from the kinetic energy of water through water turbines. Thanks to water in continuous motion, electricity can generate energy at all times. The energy generated varies according to the power of the flowing water. In the hydroelectric system, water can also be transferred to channels or pipes. Thus, thanks to the water directed towards the turbines, the turbines rotate and the released mechanical energy is converted into electrical energy.

4. Geothermal Energy

Geothermal energy is the thermal energy contained in hot dry rocks and hot fluids, such as water vapor and gas, accumulated deep within the earth. It is obtained by converting water vapor obtained from thermal regions into electrical energy through steam turbines. This natural heat source is used both in clean electricity generation and for heating and cooling purposes. One of the significant advantages of geothermal energy is that it does not depend on weather conditions, thus allowing uninterrupted energy offtake throughout the year.

Geothermal energy is a cheap and environmentally friendly energy source that does not cause carbon emissions or air pollution. For this reason, many countries benefit from this energy source. For example, Iceland is the country with the cleanest cities in the world because it heats 95 percent of its buildings with geothermal energy. Turkey is also a country rich in geothermal energy resources and has become capable of using more than half of its current capacity.

5. Biomass Energy

Biomass energy is obtained from substances containing carbohydrate compounds of plant and animal origin. Various fuels such as bioethanol, biodiesel, and biogas are obtained with this energy source. Bioethanol and biodiesel are produced using plants or animal fats, while biogases are produced by the fermentation of organic substances in an anaerobic environment. The biggest difference that distinguishes biomass from fuels is that the carbon dioxide released when they are burned can be consumed by plants during photosynthesis. Thus, it does not cause environmental pollution and global warming. In addition, biomass operation sites are generally constructed in rural areas. This situation helps increase job opportunities in rural areas and reduce migration to big cities.

Thanks to various advantages provided by biomass energy, studies towards the agriculture of renewable energy plants have started to intensify in the world in recent years. According to the June 2022 report of the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources, the total economic energy equivalent of wastes evaluated to be collectable in Turkey is approximately 3.9 MTOE/year.

6. Wave Energy

Since 70% of the world is composed of seas and oceans, wave energy is a very large and continuous energy source. These vast bodies of water offer high efficiency in energy production by ensuring that the waves are continuous and powerful. Electrical energy is generated from the kinetic energy of the resulting waves.

At the same time, seas and oceans are the places that collect solar light and heat the most. The waters on the surface heat up by directly receiving the sun, creating natural thermal energy by forming temperature differences with the cool waters in the depths. If this energy can be managed correctly, even a small portion of it could be sufficient to meet all the energy needs of the world.
